Social Media and Smart Technologies in the Classroom

It seems that lately social media has a really negative stigma attached to it. People have taken advantage of what it is capable of, which has turned a lot of people off to posting on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Despite the mindless thoughts or images that are posted to these sites, social media does have some benefits – especially when it comes to tools that are available to us.

With the adaptations and improvements that are constantly occurring with technology, it is unrealistic to expect students to not be uninterested in wanting to incorporate their smart technologies in the classroom. As future educators, we should advise students how to use these tools to their advantage rather than becoming social media zombies. If any of us will have access to smart technologies in our classes, here is a list of 2 apps that I found to be very interesting and useful.

  • Behance

Behance is an online portfolio for people to post their artwork and is a business unit within Adobe. From what I have found, it is school appropriate and seems to be a great place to display work while also being able to brainstorm from others’ work. The colors are bright and engaging, and topics range anywhere from illustration and packaging, rejected book covers, to modeling, fashion, and photography. This goes to show how broad the term ‘art’ goes, and how it means something different for almost anyone. It seems that it is similar to Deviantart, but on a more professional level. I'm not very familiar with Deviantart either, but from my understanding companies can explore the work on behance and access talent on a global scale.

  • Vimeo

Vimeo is an online video sharing and creating site. It is a great resource to explore newer media art making. It also allows for posts to discuss and comment about videos. Vimeo is similar to YouTube as a video sharing site, however Vimeo has a 'closer knit' community. It is considred to be a more professional or 'artsy' video platform. The website allows you to share and create your own videos while also exploring other artists' work and receiving constructive feedback. The example that I chose to include is beautiful in the way that it is very illustrative, and it incorporates how auditory sounds enhance artwork. I also enjoyed the message behind the video -- go outside and enjoy the scenery.
